Becoming Like Him by Elder Scott D. Whiting

The Lesson

I personally love this talk. There was a great remembrance of my efforts in obtaining patience and charity. I have seen the incremental progress to myself.

Elder Whiting started to explain how we naturally feel about this commandment to become like Him.

He introduced questions and messages that will draw our minds and hearts closer to understanding this commandment.

Then he explained the steps on how to begin a thoughtful, deliberate, and intentional pursuit of becoming as He is. For me, this is the best part of this talk. He explained every step that will help us in becoming like him.

He closed his talk by giving caution, comfort, and testimony.

The Study Guide

For teaching suggestions using my study guide, I would start the discussion by asking the question;

What are the efforts I need to do in becoming like Him?

Then, I'll ask, why it is hard for us to become like Him? What is our natural feeling towards this commandment?

TIP: It is better not to prepare a lengthy introduction to the lesson especially if there are more important points that need to be discussed.

The most important part or principles that need to be discussed during the class are the steps of becoming like Him that Elder Whiting explained. Especially the first step.

If the students read and studied the talk in advance, I could ask them to share their thoughts on Elder Whiting's explanation of how we develop the desire of becoming like Him. But if the students were not ready, I will prepare a copy of that portion and let them read and share their thoughts.

There are other ways we can do to develop our desire to be like him. I would read a portion of Elder Whiting's explanation and ask my students their special experiences where they had an honest assessment of themselves, they've asked the Lord and the people whom they trust to give direct suggestions to them.

I will share my special experience briefly on how I reacted and accepted those suggestions or inspiration to change and to repent.

Afterward, I will introduce the second & third step. I will ask the students, which Christlike attributes that they choose to focus on to develop and what are their experiences and learnings so far.

For closing, I will echo the same caution and comfort that Elder Whiting shared.

And end the class with my testimony.

What I've learned

There were many things that Elder Whiting mentioned in his talk that I actually did especially in the first step.

I have developed my desire to be patient, understanding and charitable because of non-member friends who always showed patience even in a challenging situation. And I've told myself that I want to be like him.

I have experienced where my patience, understanding, and charity were being tested. I can truly say that I incrementally progress through the grace of Him.

This talk is a reminder of me that I have to re-evaluate my desire and choose another Christlike attribute that I need to focus on. Or I have to look around the persons surrounding me and identify the best attributes they have and make it a goal to be like them.

I truly believe in this, "As we progress, we become more complete, finished, and fully developed." Each progress that we make is an effort in becoming like Him.
