The Truth Hurts But It Will Set You Free

MY TALK

Truth. Where do we get the truth? Does truth depend on our choices? Which truth do we choose?

Truth has a different meaning to each of us depending on what we choose to believe and the path we want to take.

Truth has two paths. If we choose to commit sin, we become bondage. This truth that we believe in is because we lack knowledge.

However, if we continue to choose the word of Christ, we gain freedom. This is because we learned.

What are the reasons why we become bondage or trapped?

In Mosiah 12:2, it says because of their iniquities shall be brought into bondage.

Also in Alma 30:24, 27 tells us that foolish tradition of your fathers and according to your own desires, we become bondage.

Therefore the Lord Jesus Christ said in John 8:34

Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

In Nephi 15:13, Therefore my people are gone into captivity because they have no knowledge and their honorable men are famished and their multitude dried up with thirst.

What happens if we are captive or bond?

2 Nephi 15:18 Them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity and sin as it were a cart rope.

2 Nephi 26:22 He leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever.

I like how this scripture uses the metaphor of a cart rope and a flaxen cord.

It shows us that even if we know it is wrong, we still are willing to pull the cart rope with a heavy load.

At first, the decision to stop and let go of sin could still be easy. Just like a flaxen cord, when our hands were tied with a flaxen cord, it is easy for us to break it. But when we are already tied with a strong cord, it becomes difficult to break it and let go. This time we become captive.

When is the time that the truth hurt?

1 Nephi 16:2: After Nephi told his brethren that god people will be separated from the wicked according to the justice of God. They were unhappy. They said, "Thou has declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear."

We always get hurt when we hear the truth. Why it is? Are we not willing to be corrected? Are we not willing to accept we are wrong and that we need to change?

How does the righteous taketh truth?

1 Nephi 16:3, Righteous taketh truth by;

  • willing to hearken the truth
  • give heed unto it
  • walk uprightly before God
  • will not murmur because of truth
  • will not say, thou speakest hard things against us
How does the truth set us free?
