We Will Prove Them Herewith by Elder David A. Bednar

Lesson and Study Guide

I think many of you are waiting for Elder Bednar's talk during the general conference. Is it okay to have a favorite speaker? I must admit. He is one of my favorite speakers.

I'm excited to share this talk with you today.

For the introduction, he started with his responsibility as a teacher and administrator. He connects that to the difference between the periodic test and the test of mortality. Emphasizing that the word test was not mentioned in the scripture but rather used to prove, examine, and try. He explained this further in his talk.

He acknowledged the present challenges this year and expressed his prayer and hope for all of us. He then tells us the two guiding principles that can guide and strengthen us as we face proving and trying circumstances in our lives.

He explained each of these guiding principles with scriptures, personal experiences, and invitation.

He then ended with a promise and testimony.

I prepare this study guide to give you an overview of how the talk was structured. You’ll have an idea of how to deliver this lesson during class. If you are going to use this talk for a Sunday school lesson, I may suggest that instead of sharing Elder Bednar’s experience, you may ask the personal experiences of your students. And choose which part of the explanation about PREPARATION is most important to you because this is the longest part of the talk. It might be a challenge for the teacher if you want to discuss everything.

I may also suggest it is better to study and fill out this first and you’ll be able to learn how you would teach this lesson effectively. You’ll be able to avoid reading the talk during the class and create self-examination questions. I hope this would help you teach this lesson effectively.

What I’ve learned

One of the things that I’m grateful about is that I followed the counsel of President Gordon B. Hinckley;

“I urge you . . . to look to the condition of your finances. I urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt to the extent possible. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from bondage. This is a part of the temporal gospel in which we believe. May the Lord bless you . . . to set your houses in order. If you have paid your debts, if you have a reserve, even though it be small, then should storm howl about your head, you will have shelter for your [family] and peace in your hearts.

This promise that I kept and followed for many years was proven during this pandemic that it is true! My work has stopped for six months but because I have built a reserve, we have food on our table and peace in our minds and hearts.
